She walks slowly on to the ice
Hoping it will break
Plunge in to the freezing cold
Her breath and life to take
Extra cautious and careful
Despite the purpose of the plan
Not wanting to be rescued
By some random passing man
Further out now
The ice remains resolute
But she won’t be defeated
Her purpose absolute
Shuffling toward the centre
The cracks start to sound
Her weight finally defeating
The weakening semi-solid ground
Without warning
The surface suddenly gives way
She’s plunged in to the freezing depths
Come what may
She’s shocked by the cold
Her body tenses fast
Air escapes from her lungs in surprise
How long can she last
The urge to survive takes over
Followed by instantaneous regret
The decision to end it here, this way
Is one she’ll soon forget
Blowing out the last of her air
And taking in a breath
The freezing water fills her lungs
Taking her closer to her death
The icy water stings inside
She screams but has no voice
As she sinks she starts to calm
After all, this was her choice
She recalls the things she promised
The things she wanted with her here
To her relief there’s a smile
And no sign of a tear
For the briefest second
She’s in total peace
Enveloped by the water
Happy now she’s found release
Her eyes start to close
Knowing they won’t open again
Free from everything
The anguish, the torment and pain
Two final words cross her mind
As her world ceases to be
I’m free
I’m free..........
Her eyes opened slowly
Bewildered, enraged
Rescued somehow
But she hadn’t been saved
